Welcome to the WineFormats wiki!
The purpose of this site is to describe and illustrate how wine information can be expressed using existing and well-defined microformats. It is our intention to use and leverage the microformat specifications wherever possible.
This site will NOT be used to define new microformats for wine. Instead any specification work will be done through the microformat process.
If you are not already familiar with microformats, please read this introduction or about page.

Initial Scope
One of the important initial tasks is defining how a wine itself will be represented. Although tasting notes and wine listings can be described using existing microformats, the task of defining a wine is a pre-requisite for supporting fully-defined tasting notes and wine listings.
Some ideas for applying microformats to wine content include:
Community Focused
- Tasting notes: hReview for user created tasting notes
- Winery reviews: hReview for user created winery reviews (reviews of wine retailers and winebars can also be supported with hReview)
- Comments for blog comments (what about forum posts and user comments on tasting notes, wineries, etc. on community sites?)
- geo for wine touring (also see directions)
- Cellar lists: XOXO for wine cellar listings (cellar management sites)
Region/Winery/Vineyard Focused
- Tasting notes: hReview for winemaker tasting notes
- hCard / adr for contact information for wine region associations, wineries, tasting room addresses, vineyards
- geo for GPS coordinates for wine regions, wineries, and vineyards
- hCalendar for wine region and winery events
- Wine listings: hListing for listing winery wine release information
Retail Focused
- hCard / adr for contact information for wine retailers and wine bars
- geo for GPS coordinates for wine retail and wine bar locations
- hCalendar for wine retail and wine bar events
- Wine listings: hListing for listing wines for sale/trade/auction
- Species for varietal, yeast, and bacteria (wine industry suppliers)
Other
- Tasting descriptors: how tasting descriptors are represented in tasting notes
- I took a quick stab at a logo to replace the stock one provided by MediaWiki but if anyone has any ideas for something different, go for it!
